Rebuilding One House At A Time With WFP
Last month we shared scenes of destruction from Tropical Storm Washi that ravaged southern Philippines.
This time we are happy to share that the survivors are rebuilding their homes and WFP is helping make that happen.  By providing food as incentive for the community members to work on their houses, WFP is supporting the Philippine Government’s relocation shelter project in Sta. Elena Village, Iligan City where approximately 1,700 houses — such as the one in the photo — will be built.
Showing full solidarity with the survivors at the relocation site’s groundbreaking ceremony are (L-R): WFP Philippines Country Director and Representative Stephen Anderson, WFP Asia Regional Director Kenro Oshidari, WFP Philippines-Iligan Sub-Office Head Baicon Macaraya, WFP Ambassador Against Hunger KC Concepcion, Philippine Vice-President Jejomar Binay, Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Dinky Soliman and Philippine President Benigno Aquino III.

The 22-member Panel, established by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in August 2010 to formulate a new blueprint for sustainable development and low-carbon prosperity, was co-chaired by Finnish President Tarja Halonen and South African President Jacob Zuma.
The Panel’s final report, “Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing,” contains 56 recommendations to put sustainable development into practice and to mainstream it into economic policy as quickly as possible.
